On the basis of the existing structure, a small house on Caputher See is to be converted to a sculptor’s studio. The roof and façade are cast from the same mould with local bricks. In the loft interior, rough exposed concrete meets wood and glass.

Studio in Caputh

Ready for transformation into an artist’s studio, the little old house is located in the second row facing the idyllic Caputher See. A statute of Brandenburg Town Council requires the preservation of the essential features of the old house on the lake. The conversion of the house to a sculptor’s studio “in residence” was planned with the same cubic volume, but in a completely contemporary architectural language. The roof and façades are cast from the same mould and encased in local bricks. On the street side a large, timber-cladded bay window draws the eye to the inside of the loft beneath the sloping roof with a glazed loggia that is oriented to the lake. Below this, the space opens into a small yard that is enclosed by a brick wall. The rough exposed concrete of the supporting structure corresponds with the wood-panelled walls. Following conversion, the character of the transformed structure harmonizes with the existing shoreline development and neighbouring, small-scale properties, some of which have been refurbished in line with building preservation regulations.
