As an oversized sculpture, this residence reflects a desire for originality and personal identity. The appearance of the family home is defined by two masses of different lengths that overlap each other with a total length of sixteen metres and a width of nine metres. The owner placed a special emphasis on openness, light-suffused rooms and flexibility. Following these formal requirements, the plans for the house called for an arrangement of five rooms on two-and-a-half floors.

Optimum use of space on the small Potsdam site, in conjunction with a sophisticated construction method, ensures the cost-efficiency of the house. A single-storey timber box with natural cedar wood facing is overarched by a long, narrow, plastered beam that features a striking overhang on its front side for a weather-protected entry and car port. The steel column located here stands out in a contrasting colour.

The ground floor was conceived as a continuous, flowing space. The living areas and an open-plan kitchen are grouped around a compact functional core. An extensive glazed frontage opens onto the rear garden. The main bedroom and children’s room are located on the first floor at the two glazed end walls, separated by a single-flight staircase and two bathrooms. Above this, further rooms are to be found beneath a sloping roof to one side, each with a wardrobe niche. Opposite, on the roof of the single-storey tract above the living room, a walk-on wooden deck offers additional usable space as a sun terrace.
