Glazed recesses on the ground floor, striking dormers in the differently sloped roof. A traditional building is to be slightly modified with only a few tricks, and it already offers generous space for a five-person family.

Family dwelling

A site in the second row of Wannsee’s Friedenstraße offers natural qualities and a magnificent panoramic view. The local development plan permits only 1.5 floors at this location. The roof pitch, eaves height and jamb wall have also been prescribed. With a clever layout, the house nevertheless fulfils the room schedule for a five-person family. The ground floor is completely glazed on one longitudinal side and over a corner with floor-to-ceiling ash wood windows. A door in the flank wall – half of it transparent – gives access to a terrace at ground level. On the window frontage, load-bearing steel columns support the wide-spanning structure. The open floor plan with kitchen integrated into the living area is otherwise only subdivided by a massive core with a fireplace and sanitary facilities, and supported by a massive wall slab, behind which the staircase is located. A roof with a laterally staggered ridge beneath sloping surfaces floats over the light-filled ground floor. In combination with two large, slightly protruding dormers, the selected roof shape with two different slopes conveys the spatial impression of a full floor. The roof spaces are additionally illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows on the flank walls. The habitable basement offers extra living space for guests. Beneath the glass front of the ground floor the garden is sloped so that the basement rooms receive daylight through the extensive glazing to the garden.

The insulated brick façade of the massive masonry construction is matched on the inside by large-format natural stone floor tiles. Modern, timeless counterpoints to the solid impression are the load-bearing exposed concrete wall slab on the inside, the stressed reveal of the dormer windows and the clear concrete elements in the garden.
