“Göttingen goes hybrid” – Transformation and revitalization

The master plan prepared by Gnädinger Architects for the urban quarter Heinrich-von-Stephan Strasse is a viable and sustainable concept for a former commercial site on the fringe of Göttingen’s city centre. The proposed structure is aimed at reducing high noise emissions and creates the prerequisites for a functioning mixture of residential and compatible commercial uses.

Among the positive locational factors are a relatively young and productive population, the proximity to educational and research facilities and the possible attraction of flexible and independent activities through increasing digitization. With a view to the rejuvenation of the productive city in ecological, economic and social terms, the proposed strategy is geared in the long term to the fast-changing framework conditions in commerce and trade, in working life and leisure behaviour. In addition to redefining the type of mixed uses, this 13,400 m² site located close to the railway station thus offers an opportunity to revitalize an important but previously neglected part of Göttingen.

Diverse urbanity

The planning approach taken by Gnädinger Architects gives rise to an attractive, unconventional urban place that, while orienting itself to the city’s historically developed structures, often breaks with traditions. Furthermore, with its widely visible appeal the planning concept creates an important link between the historic centre and neighbourhoods beyond the railway station, thereby lending momentum to the identity-building power of the city.

The structure reflects the style of the surrounding townscape. Gable-ended or lengthwise oriented buildings create a transition to Göttingen’s historic half-timbered architecture. Saddle roofs span the new perimeter development. The playful small scale and diversity of different building typologies permit harmonious integration into the urban context.

Within a small space in the microcosmos of an urban quarter, Gnädinger Architects create – almost as in a vibrant European city – different, mutually positively influencing points of attraction. The ensemble of single and slab buildings arranged around an urban green space offers many opportunities to combine urban production, commerce, office and retail with residential, cultural and culinary uses.
