Haven of peace and communicative meeting place

The design of the coffee house for the Bundesgartenschau 2001 in Potsdam was based on an earlier competition requiring a nationwide call for submissions and the resulting 1st Prize. Beyond the “BuGa”, the goal was to create a haven of peace and a communicative meeting place on this plot of land in the Bornstedter Feld for the adjacent neighbourhood. The two-storey, 22-metre long building with a 15-metre, sloping exposed concrete rear wall was built against the historic ramparts. Its fully copper-plated roof shell extends from the wall almost to the floor and is interrupted only by the glass cube serving as an entrance. On the inside the guest is welcomed by a pleasant light-suffused hall whose glazed flank walls open directly onto the terrace, play and water areas.
