An artificial climbing wall serves amateur sports enthusiasts and mountaineers as a vertical practice facility for a wide range of climbing techniques. With a stair tower and viewing platform, the wall awakens in tourists and walkers a passion for climbing.
Competition success for climbing wall
The idea to use disused concrete slabs for an artificial climbing facility at Bornstedter Feld in Potsdam was born in the early 2000s, at a time when pre-fabricated slab buildings were being dismantled. The winning entry to a limited competition organized by the business association ProPotsdam featured an elevated, organically curved sculpture as a landmark embedded in the park landscape. The open-air climbing facility consists of a multi-curved, snake-shaped structure with colour-differentiated façade panels and various rooms to accommodate clubs and sports enthusiasts.
The final result was a climbing wall of recycled concrete slabs, stacked on top of one another in a gentle curve. It offers mountaineers and amateur rock climbers the opportunity to train various climbing techniques. A stair tower at the side also brings tourists and walkers to a sculptural viewing platform that extends like a ribbon over the whole facility. The 30-metre wide and 25-metre high climbing facility is open to a broad public. All grades of difficulty and climbing types are included, from alpine sport climbing with abseiling to amateur bouldering. The concrete wall has rugged and angular sections for practising cliff climbing, as well as smooth surfaces with coloured grips that offer creative routes for leisure activities.
