With the string of offset cubes and a pavilion-like structure, the family dwelling is sensitive to its immediate surroundings on the water and echoes the design language of classical modernism.

Maritime living in Sonwik

Transparent and lightweight as a glider, the slim house docks onto the lateral end of the jetty. In the design concept the single-story family dwelling is positioned at a distance from the landing stage. The intentional offsetting of alternating cubes creates intermediate spaces, atriums and terrace landscapes with differentiated perspectives in a prominent position.

With its yacht marina, over the last few years the Flensburg district of Sonwik has developed into a sought-after location. Recent water homes directly on the jetty and the two new high-rise residential buildings frame the cluster of buildings that has grown around the former naval base since the beginning of the 20th century. In this urban planning situation the building envelope with a size of 60 x 14 metres integrates smoothly into the sea. As a dwelling house with attached home office, the proposed cubic volume mediates between the neighbouring water homes and the urban dwellings and penthouses on the touristically-developed Flensburg harbour promenade.

Vertical glazing in the form of sliding windows blurs the boundaries between inside and outside space. In combination with the space creation of the cubes, it creates the impression of merging light and shade. In the centre of the house, a spacious multi-functional living room serves as a kitchen, dining, living and lounge area. The terrace roof provides additional space with a panoramic view. The programme-free architecture makes use of the stylistic device of modernism. The philosophy is to create space and make it perceptible, with the goal of achieving a maritime quality of life.
